Today was supposed to be Day 14 of my 21 Day Sugar Detox from Balanced Bites .
Part of the program includes starting from Day 1 if you ‘slip up’ on any of the bad foods list (even if it’s good sugars, like from pineapple or honey) so I’m reporting back to you on my NEW Day 2 of the detox. You’d think I’d be more remorseful, but let me explain:
Two nights ago my friend Allen (Chef Allen Campbell of Raw Body Foods ) asked if I could help him out in the kitchen prepping and plating dishes for his Foods with Benefits dinner. The event in Wynwood was hosted by Conscious Bite Out and Farm Fresh Miami.
About 70 people gathered for a sit down dinner with hors devours and a four course meal packed with Allen’s top superfoods. Everything on the menu was gluten free and vegan (minus the raw honey and bee pollen provided by a local beekeeper).
Obviously you guys know I’m all about the meat, but I’d eat these dishes any day. My favorite of the night was his jerk boniato with nutty local honey. I forgot to take a picture of them, but I did eat at least a full plate of those f*ckers. SO GOOD!
In fact, I think I did more ‘taste testing’ than actual work. A couple of our buddies were also there so I literally got to hang around food all night with great company, be of service to Allen, and gorge myself with amazing food- all gluten free, all natural without preservatives, and no refined sugars (just raw honey and maple syrup to sweeten things.)
So when I say I relapsed on sugar, I mean that I ate like 100 pineapple bok choy kabobs and a huge smearing of pecan maple syrup. Oh and some honey strawberry semifreddo . At least it wasn’t a dozen Dunkin Donuts- and I truly had a blast so I don’t regret it.
At first I had a fleeting thought of covering up my sugar slip. Ya know… because no one would know if I didn’t call myself out. But I would know, and being a fraud just isn’t sexy. So if anyone else has slipped up during their detox then hopefully I can be an example of personal honesty. Sure I’d prefer to be on Day 14 but at least I’m used to this whole ‘no sugar’ thing. And thank God I didn’t have to go through sugar withdrawels again!
I’m glad i didn’t use it as an excuse to binge on crap sweets with the insane logic of ‘Well I might as well make it count, d*mnit!’ Thanks for keeping me accountable, guys.
