Does it make me a bad American if I don’t like football? It’s not that I don’t like football in particular, because really I don’t like ANY sports. Well I guess it’s more like I’m indifferent to them. But oddly enough I do enjoy Super Bowl parties. What’s not to like about getting together with friends and family to eat lots of food while yelling at the TV? At least the commercials are interesting. And the half-time show.
My most memorable Super Bowl was the year that Janet Jackson had her nip-slip with Justin Timberlake. I went with my friend to her church where they were having this great big Super Bowl party. But come the half-time show and the minister turns off the live projector to do a sermon- and I got MAJORLY gipped on some legendary entertainment! Worst luck ever.
Moving right along. If you’re new to Paleo and feeling like it will be impossible to turn down frozen potato skins and pizza at your friend’s Super Bowl party, then consider bringing your own snacks. I find that usually when I take this approach in social situations then it’s so much easier to turn down any foods that would tempt me away from my ideals.
Here is my list of 20 Paleo Super Bowl snacks:
Pork Rinds (Chicharrones)– It wouldn’t be football without pork rinds. Seriously. If I were invited to a Super Bowl party and the host didn’t have pork rinds I’d turn right around and walk out the door. In Miami they call them chicarrones and I can personally attest that this is the best chicharrone recipe I’ve ever followed. Takes some time, but definitely worth it.
Sweet Potato Bruschetta– from Swiss Paleo, this is a really creative spin on the traditional Bruchetta. Cut your sweet potatoes with care to make sure they don’t break.
Bacon Guacamole– Chips and Dip are a Super Bowl staple. This Bacon Guac is the Peyton Manning of dips. Eat it with tortilla chips if you are cool with corn, and if not, just mosey on down to the next item on the list.
Gluten Free Sausage Bites- Not strictly paleo, but gluten free and primal these hot sausage bites from Paleo Heretic are the perfect snack to bring along as your contribution to a non-paleo Super Bowl Party.
Baked Plantain Chips– Potato Chips without the potato. I never loved plantain chips until I got into Paleo. Now, I have to limit my portions when I go out for my Mariquitas fix (plantain chips served with a mojo sauce.)
Pistachio Chicken Tenders– a nut based “breading” with a tangy black currant dipping sauce.
Loaded Paleo Nachos– Check out Lexi’s spin on a Super Bowl Classic. Sweet Potato Chips take the place of corn in this paleoized version of Loaded Nachos.
Zucchini Fries– Primally Inspired’s Zucchini Fries with her Blooming Onion dipping sauce. Perfect Paleo finger food.
Moroccan Meatballs– An exotic twist on the traditional meatball from The Clothes Make the Girl
Paleo Buffalo Wings– Black Girl Eats Clean says these are the best ever paleo wings. I tried them, and I don’t know if I have the experience to confirm that they are indeed the best paleo wings ever, but I can say they were darn good!
Primal Spring Rolls– This one is Primal, not Paleo, but there is nothing like some pot stickers for the Big Game.
Bacon Cauliflower Cheese Sticks– just because you can’t eat bread doesn’t mean you have to forgo cheese sticks. Just replace dough with cauliflower and you are good to go.
Crab Stuffed Mushrooms- For the more sophisticated Super Bowl Celebrant, try these awesome crab stuffed mushrooms from Against All Grain.
Green Sliders– Nom Nom Paleo ‘s signature slider delivers your veggies and your beef all in one tiny package. Spinach, mushrooms, and beef are the foundation of this delicious burger recipe.
Paleo Chicken Tenders– Paleo KFC Chicken Tender Knock Off from Brittany Angel! I told you she was good.
Proscuitto and Feta Stuffed Mushrooms– Fancy, beautiful, and absolutely delicious. One of my all time favorite appetizers.
Cashew “Cheese” Spread– Some Paleo folks eat cheese, some don’t. This is the perfect “cheese” spread for those that don’t. Eat it with veggies or plantain chips or use it for something a little more fancy like the next recipe on the list.
Bacon Jalapeno Cheese Bites– With Paleo there are some things you miss, like Jalapeno Poppers. Sometimes we try to make “substitutes” and most times if we are lucky we end up with a close approximation of the real version. This recipe is one of those “substitutes” that exceeds the original.
Poutine– Had the Oregon Boundary Dispute gone a different way, the Seattle Seahawks would be Canadian and this would mark the first ever international Super Bowl match up. So to honor the 42nd Parallel boundary that-could have-been why not make this delicious Paleo Poutine?
Paleo Samosas- My Heart Beets makes these delicious Paleo Samosas with her famous 3 ingredient paleo naan recipe. Genius!
Paleo Bruschetta- You’ve tried Swiss Paleo’s take on this, now try Everyday Italian’s.
Kale Chips– What Plantain Chips are to the Potato Chip, Kale Chips are to Doritos. Bust this recipe out if you are a Portland based Seahawks fan hosting a houseful of Vegans.
Spicy Kale Chips– The Kale Chip recipe for folks who like their Kale chips a bit spicier.
Primal Pizza Bites– It’s not delivery, it’s DePaleo’s Primal Pizza Bites! Great primal snack for kids and adults.
And before I sign out, my official Super Bowl Prediction:
New England Patriots 34
Seattle Seahawks 17
