I’m Rachel- a quirky 25 year-old living in Miami Beach, Florida.
When I’m not hustling around all day in the Food & Beverage Industry, I’m home making new recipes that are healthy and delicious. My recipes are entirely gluten-free, grain-free, and refined sugar-free. I stick to the guidelines of The Primal Diet as outlined in Mark Sisson’s book The Primal Blueprint. This website is dedicated to sharing those recipes with you guys, as well as throwing in the occasional product review and random rant.
So what brought me to this specific lifestyle?
Since the age of 13 I have battled with severe Rosacea acne and IBS. After consulting with a dermatologist and gastroenterologist, it was decided that the two were linked; my hormones were going crazy, I had anxiety from being teased at school BIG TIME, and because of it I was getting a nervous stomach every morning. The two issues got so bad that I was put on Accutane and stomach medication to help control things that same year. Not once did either doctor suggest that my diet was the cause of all my troubles.
My metabolism has always been fast so I pretty much survived on Little Debbie snacks and root beer. I never ate vegetables and fruit, and I turned my nose up at anything REAL FOOD related. What made matters worse was I never became overweight. Instead, my cholesterol and triglycerides were through the roof (in high school!) and my face was a walking neon red sign screaming that my body needed to detox itself from all the processed crap I was shoving into it.
My self-esteem was so low and I eventually turned to drugs and alcohol to smother my emotions. I couldn’t even make eye contact. I really lost myself back then because putting all those chemicals into my body just made my symptoms worse. Years later I was able to overcome those emotional problems, but my diet still mirrored a person living a chaotic life. Donuts and cinnamon rolls for breakfast, coffee multiple times throughout the day to make up for the carb crashes, pizza or pasta for later meals. And then of course: dessert. I was still on the rollercoaster of sugar and gluten, but I didn’t know it.
In 2010, my boyfriend started getting into unconventional health wisdom and told me about the effects that sugar has on the body. I decided to take the plunge and after only four full days of no sugar or gluten (along with withdrawals) I was AMAZED at the difference. My face wasn’t oily, red, and broken out anymore! For the first time in years my digestion was on track. It was like a freaking miracle!
Sites like Mark’s Daily Apple and Wheat Belly have helped change my life. I’m definitely not perfectly Primal 100% of the time (more like 80/20), but I’m totally a different person from the nutrient-deficient girl I used to be. My mood swings are more in tune with the natural rhythm of my body. I’m not chasing down Dunkin Donuts like I did (ok, maybe once or twice randomly when I’m in a funk). I do weightlifting a few times throughout the week and have become enthralled with yoga (Anusara and Skanda being my favorite styles of yoga). I can honestly say I am in the best shape of my entire life!
Eating healthy last week won’t keep me healthy today. Every single day I need to work on myself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s quite the struggle, but it’s well worth it. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you stick around and enjoy the journey with me!
