As promised on Instagram, here is my 5 minute cold shower video challenge:
I first came across this video when I was checking out the list of other contributors for the Fat-Burning Chef Cookbook, and the blog name Impossible HQ jumped out at me. ‘Strange name for a food blog,’ I thought.
Turns out Impossible HQ is a site from Joel Runyan, who decided to set out and accomplish a list of all things that he thought was impossible. Raising money to build a school in Guatamala. Gaining 6 pack abs. Starting a 30 day cold shower challenge.
Yeah, he’s pretty legit. [Check out his page for a list of other websites he is involved in, this guy is intense!]
So I watched his video and it immediately sparked my interest. Joel videotaped himself taking a 5 minute cold shower as part of his cold therapy regimen. I’ve always DETESTED cold showers, so of course I thought it was hilariously painful to watch. Then I had the thought of ‘well if he can do it, maybe I can too.’
So the next time I took a shower I soaped up, finished my washing, and then turned the hot water off. FML. Worst decision ever. I think I lasted 2 minutes, hopping around, and growling into the water.
Very effective (not). I did about 4 showers like that throughout the week and then totally wrote it off. Fast forward to two days ago when I said screw it, and decided to make of video. I’m much less of a pansy on stage, afterall.
Turns out I’ve been taking cold showers WRONG. You gotta just jump into the cold shower straight without any warm-up hot water. Doing it that way makes you want to kill yourself. Trust me.
Sure, it was hard to keep track of the health benefits when I was under the cold stream on camera, but I’ll list them for you here now that I’m much more lucid:
Cold water therapy (on a CONTINUOUS basis, not just once or twice) includes these health benefits.
- Increased metabolism
- Strengthens immune system
- Improved circulation
- Battles depression
- Luscious hair and skin
- Weight loss
- Increased testosterone
So, you wanna see me look like a cold drowned rat in the shower? Watch this video:

I’m really curious about what you guys think about cold water therapy and the effects it has on the body. Have you tried it continuously? Did it work? Was it a bust? I wanna hear your thoughts. And like I said on the video, I wanna see YOUR 5 minute cold shower challenge video! #coldshowervideochallenge
