Last month I was scrolling through my Instagram feed when I came across an up and coming company which sells Paleo approved protein bars. I think what caught my eye was the picture of a T-Rex dinosaur with totally ripped muscle arms. Odd, since T-Rex’s are infamous for having the smallest, saddest, most pitiful arms. Poor T-Rex.
SR Bars (SR stands for Swolasaurus Rex, ha!) is a small, independently run business in Virginia Beach. Gluten free, grain free, dairy free, and free of artificial chemicals and sweeteners. These bars boast 20 grams of protein along with one of the shortest ingredients list I’ve ever seen on a health food bar.
The protein in SR Bars come primarily from dehydrated egg whites. The almond butter provides a bit more protein and most of the fat. I really loved the egg whites in these bars. They add a subtle, meringue style taste that I’ve never experienced in a protein bar before and the texture is perfect. Besides being delicious, these bars are also VERY filling. Like, ‘oops-I-forgot-to-eat-breakfast-but-it’s-cool-because-I-can-eat-half-this-protein-bar-and-be-sattiated-till-lunch’ kind of filling. Which comes in handy, trust me.
SR Bars come in four flavors right now- Mocha Chip, Coconut Almond, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Walnut Apple Pie. Mocha Chip was definitely my favorite. Blame it on my fondness of coffee straight from the womb, or the fact that they use real coffee and raw cacao nibs instead of chocolate chips. Yeah, they really won my heart on that decision. My second favorite was the Coconut Almond, because who doesn’t like bits of crunchy almond and coconut in… everything? My least favorite flavor had to be Mint Chocolate Chip. I think it was a weird flavor combination (cool mint vs. meringue flavor) yet I still ate the whole thing. Obviously. I kept telling my boyfriend “I don’t think I like this, but I can’t stop eating it!” Damn you, eggwhites. Mmm.
Compare their ingredient list to Clif Bars, which is probably the most common “natural” protein bar found on conventional market shelves. Clif Bars’ list can run 19 ingredients long and contains such Paleo heresies as soy, PUFA’s, and “natural flavorings”. SR Bars, by contrast, contain six ingredients or less and every one is both natural and Paleo approved. #Winning
Seriously, if you like supporting small/local businesses, I’d suggest heading over to SRBars.com and ordering some protein bars off these guys! I suspect they’re about to blow up,and rightly so. Esther, the owner, is so nice and gives great customer service. And they ship FAST! I got my package delivered in 4 days. That’s crazy talk.
You can thank me later.
