The time has finally arrived to admit the one thing I did NOT want to admit, even though I’ve secretly known it for years.
Sugar is no longer my BFFL. Somewhere along the way it turned on me, and now I’m a stark-raving sugar-holic. It’s been in control of me for far too long and it’s time to take drastic measures.
I’m writing this a full 36 hours of being clean from sugar in all forms: processed sugar, fruit, ‘healthy’ sugars, wheat, dairy, alcohol, treats, and the list goes on. But 36 hours, whooptie doo, right?
WRONG. If you are anything like me (a sugar-crazed addict) then you’ll understand what a huge deal being 36 hours clean from sugar is. That means not even in sauces, drinks, and any other secret hiding spots sugar creeps up in.
So what exactly is The 21-Day Sugar Detox and why all the fuss about detoxing from it in the first place?
I’m not a scientist, and right now I don’t feel like looking up solid information to back up my claim, but from my EXPERIENCE sugar is freaking addictive and it’s killing me slowly. Duh.
I’ve known that for years. In fact, the whole reason I got into this primal lifestyle was because I watched Dr. Lustig’s video Sugar: The Bitter Truth. Then I started reading Wheat Belly. And then I started following Mark’s Daily Apple and the rest is history.
Dessert has always been my favorite meal of the day. I’m a firm believer that I have two stomachs- one for ‘regular’ food and one for dessert. No matter how stuffed I am from dinner (heck, or even lunch) I’m ready for dessert immediately.
Pass on dessert? Yeah right, b*tches! Weddings, birthdays, special occasions- What a perfect excuse to ‘cheat’ on my primal diet with a damn good slice of cake. Or if I’m being strict on avoiding wheat then for sure I’ll scrape off the icing into my mouth. (Insert head hanging in shame from being the WORST nutritional food blogger ever.)
And of course the more sugar I eat (because I’m justifying it like ‘at least it’s only a paleo treat’ or ‘but using maple syrup won’t hurt’) eventually snowballs and suddenly I’m scarfing down mini cupcakes, truffle raviolis, and hysterically sobbing into my tiramisu over my flooded car that’s gonna cost me $500. (Ok that last bit was a mixture of PMS as well, I can’t blame it ALL on the sugar crashes.)
So ok, I’m admitting complete defeat. I need help. I can’t do it alone. And suddenly The 21 Day Sugar Detox looks like the answer to all my problems.
The 21-Day Sugar Detox (21DSD for short) was created by Diane Sanfilippo (of www.BalancedBites.com and Practical Paleo). I follow her on FB and have even cooked some of her recipes recently which were freaking delicious. Her program is all about beating sugar and carb cravings by regulating blood sugar levels.
I’ve been hearing a lot of people over the past year talk about their sugar detox. I can honestly say I was intrigued- even though it sounded like a grueling 21 days. No lethargy? No sugar crashes? Mood swings leveling out? Reduced acne? Cellulite buster? Sign me up!
Yes I’m worried that I’ll slip up accidently. I’ve been very vigilant about any food that has passed my lips so far, but sugar is sneaky y’all. Last night I was waving a single carrot and Justin’s Almond Butter in my boyfriend’s face singing about how delicious my ‘dessert’ was going to be, when I realized it was Justin’s HONEY almond butter. What the ef Rachel!
Good thing I caught it before I started spooning it in my mouth.
Anyway, I’ll be updating my progress (hopefully) and posting 21DSD approved recipes throughout the next couple weeks. Until then!
